VCU – STEAM PLANT FIRE ALARM SYSTEM UPGRADE
The 18,315 square foot Steam Plant Facility operates 24/7, 365 days of the year and is equipped with central boiler heating plant that support the VCU Medical Center and several state office buildings. The facility was equipped with two fire alarm systems, one Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP) by Honeywell that provided automatic and manual fire alarm and notification system for the entire facility, and another FACP by Simplex that was installed in 2021 to provide automatic and manual fire suppression clean agent releasing system to protect the Main Electrical Room on the mezzanine level. The electrical design included removal of the obsolete Honeywell FACP and replacement of any Honeywell devices (alarm initiating, alarm notification and supervisory) with Simplex devices to be connected to the existing Simplex FACP. The Simplex system was upgraded with additional battery capacity as needed to support existing and new devices, and a digital alarm communicating transmitter (DACT) was provided for remote monitoring by VCU’s proprietary central station. All conduit (existing and new) was painted red.
